Breaking the rules: This Martha’s Vineyard auction succeeds by doing things differently.

Two weeks ago I worked with a nonprofit in Massachusetts which has a fairly unique benefit auction model. Though they share some of the same overarching goals as many of my clients (e.g. fundraising, donor stewardship, community awareness, etc.), the event has a long history of doing some things differently. Here are a few elements that make this charity auction unusual. It's a low ticket price -- $25 per person Guests dress casually; some wore shorts. It's an afternoon affair. ... Read On >

Why change an auction venue? (This hospital foundation moves annually.)

My most recent auction was in upstate New York, working with Adirondack Health Foundation. I've worked with this creative development staff for three years, and I'm impressed that they've held their fundraising gala in a new location every year. In today's post I'm going to share a few reasons as to why you might want to consider changing your auction venue.   But first I think you'd enjoy seeing a video recap of the hospital's gala, "The Black & White Bow Tie Gala."  Here it ... Best ballroom layout for an auction with dance floor

Many nonprofits end their benefit auctions with dancing from either a DJ or a live band. Traditionally there are two standard layouts for this type of event, and both are poor. The dance floor becomes the area from which the auctioneer works. Neither of these options works because neither set-up ... Read On >

Unique fundraising auction venue: car dealership

Earlier this month I headed to Florida to again work with a Boys & Girls Club whose fundraising auction venue is a local car dealership. Clearly this dealership is a good partner of the nonprofit, greatly inconveniencing itself to transform its space -- sales floor, customer waiting area, service bay and lanes -- into a festive venue to host a sit-down dinner for just under 200 guests. Attendees begin the evening with a reception and silent auction in the service bay and customer ... Read On >

Eleven options for fundraising auction venues

A client called last week. Her preferred benefit auction venue is booked, and she's on the hunt for a new space that will hold 200-250 guests. "Can you point me in a few directions?" she asked. Here in the Washington, D.C. area I have a list of interesting venues to meet her guest count. But as this blog is read by auction planners from across the globe, I'm going to be more general. Changing your venue is an easy way to give a facelift to your benefit auction and it comes with the ... Read On >
