How I remember donor names at the auction gala to carry the conversation forward

How to remember donor names at the auction gala

Over time I’ve learned methods to remembering names — rhymes, association, repetition. My memory has never been perfect but I’ve managed well enough.

These days — likely due to a combination of age, too many life tasks, and the volume of people I meet — I’ve struggled..

Each year brings new Gala Chairs, committee members, Board members, donors, and guests. The following year, I want to remember those returning people *and* meet new folks.

To aid my memory, I started incorporating an old trick learned from a short stint I had in P.R. — photo sheets.

It takes time to create, but collecting photos helps me to remember people, especially guests with whom I might have only had a brief conversation.

During my research to find the photo, I also learn more about each person. I read newspaper articles, watch YouTube videos, and scan a donor’s work history on LinkedIn.

If you struggle to remember people’s names or want to familiarize new employees, Board members, or your auctioneer to your guests, this tool might be something to incorporate into your planning, too.

Learn more about my process in the video below.
