This is a great example of why you need to conduct a professional, well-run benefit auction.

The donor of this round-trip flight to Tangiers Island had attended this gala the year prior … as a guest. He was so impressed, he offered to make his own donation this year. His $750 donation sold for $3200. (Your event will grow organically when you conduct it properly!)

This gala is an auction for the largest social services agency in northern Virginia. About 550 guests attend, and we usually sell 5-10 items.

This event has one of the best-looking silent auctions in Washington, D.C. They do a stellar job.

At this gala of 800 guests, benefit auctioneer Sherry Truhlar reassures a bidder that he shouldn’t be afraid of the competing bidder, then she sells the item.

This auction is ~200 people in a carnival atmosphere. To give you a flavor of the event: immediately after I sell, the family-friendly band has an air-guitar contest for all the little kids.

This is not the type of auction I’d usually sell two fine bottles of wine, but the donation came in. We had a gorgeous 1967 Chateau Lafite Rothschild and 1966 Chateau Mouton Rothschild.

Surprisingly, we sold them for estimated value. They were one of the highest selling items at this event.

Whoo whee! July 4 … in Washington, D.C. … at the Kennedy Center. A perfect Independence Day package, and it sold well over value.

Sometimes I can get bidders to move beyond that $1300 hump, and other times I can’t. Ce la vie! :)

The event is a true “family friendly” environment with chef stations, face painting, dance competitions, and more enjoyed by the ~200 guests.

This event has no silent auction. It’s a live auction of 16 items, held in a music club, and guests stand on the dance floor. Each year it’s a struggle to keep the items to a reasonable number because when you don’t have a silent auction, you really need to make those items special!
